Boston Terriers are highly intelligent dogs and learn things quickly. They usually weight up to 25lbs and are short-coated but they do shed. They can be a great partner at performance events (agility, obedience, barn hunt, coursing, fly ball, dock diving), therapy work and cuddling. Bostons can excel in many roles. They enjoy being with their humans most of all. They typically do well with children and other pets, although some may chase cats or exhibit prey drive towards small animals. They are easy to groom and typically don’t have a lingering ‘doggy odor’. They are compact and energetic and demand their humans attention and affection so if you aren’t home very much or you want a couch potato dog this might not be the breed for you.
Since Bostons are active dogs they can become frustrated without training, direction and attention to keep their brains engaged. They may nip at your fingers or toes or jump on you when they get excited. These behaviors and others can be decreased or eliminated with proper exercise both physical and mental.
Boston Terriers can also be prone to some health problems, such as cataracts, deafness and luxating patellas. While reputable breeders do testing to screen for these conditions (as well as sometimes others) in their breeding dogs and puppies, there is not a 100% guarantee that your dog may not be afflicted. While typically not a health concern many bostons also snore and they can be gassy at times.
More information on the breed from AKC can be found here. The traditional breed standard as supported by the Boston Terrier Club of America can be read here.
I do not breed ‘designer/rare colors’ or intentional ‘mis-marks/splash’. For information on why these dogs are not ‘rare’ or something that is desired in a reputable breeding program, please go here.
All of our puppies are registered with AKC and can also be registered with United Kennel Club (UKC) as well if the owner desires. Pets are placed on limited registration with a spay/neuter contract.
